Unlike self-etch or universal adhesives, Tetric N-Bond comes after a separate phosphoric-acid conditioning step on enamel and dentin, following Ivoclar's clinical protocol. The etching stage prepares the tooth surface first, and the adhesive is then actively applied to build the resin-tooth interface the restoration will bond to.
Its solvent system is ethanol-based and acetone-free, which supports controlled wetting as you work across the conditioned surfaces. You brush it into the preparation to encourage even penetration, then air-thin it carefully to promote solvent evaporation and prevent pooling — a step worth taking seriously, since a layer that's too thick or uneven can interfere with adaptation, and inadequate solvent evaporation can compromise how well the adhesive polymerizes.
The nano-filled formulation supports the formation of a smooth, homogeneous adhesive layer. After application, the glossy appearance helps the clinician assess whether the conditioned enamel and dentin have been covered before air thinning and light curing. Once it's properly air-thinned and light-cured, the adhesive becomes the bonding layer sitting between the etched tooth structure and whichever restorative material comes next.
Tetric N-Bond is mainly used for direct light-cured composite and compomer restorations, though it also has a place in selected adhesive-luting procedures for light-transmitting all-ceramic and composite restorations — certain inlays, onlays, and veneers, for instance. It's worth being clear that it's an adhesive, not a resin cement, so a compatible luting material is still needed alongside it.
Because it's light-cured, getting adequate light access to the preparation matters. Curing time, irradiance, wavelength, and application technique should all follow Ivoclar's current instructions and whatever your curing unit calls for. And compatibility with self-cure or dual-cure restorative materials shouldn't be assumed — check that the full restorative system and manufacturer protocol actually permit it before combining them.

Composition
The formulation includes:

- Prepare and isolate the tooth according to the planned restorative procedure.
- Condition the enamel and dentin with a compatible phosphoric-acid etchant according to Ivoclar's current instructions.
- Rinse thoroughly and manage dentin moisture as directed; avoid desiccating the preparation.
- Dispense the required amount of Tetric N-Bond into a clean, light-protected mixing well.
- Use a fresh disposable applicator to apply a generous, complete layer to all conditioned enamel and dentin surfaces.
- Actively brush the adhesive into the dentin for the application period specified by Ivoclar.
- Check that the entire preparation is coated; apply additional material where coverage is incomplete.
- Use a gentle, oil-free air stream to evaporate the solvent and distribute the adhesive into a thin, uniform film without pooling.
- Light-cure using a compatible curing unit for the exposure time and intensity specified in the current instructions.
- Proceed with placement of the compatible restorative or luting material.
