Description

A root canal sealer must adapt between prepared dentin and the obturation core while remaining easy to mix, place, and control. Kerr Sealapex is a polymeric, calcium hydroxide–based sealer developed for permanent endodontic obturation with gutta-percha. It is supplied as separate base and catalyst pastes that mix to a smooth, workable consistency for controlled placement along the prepared canal walls.

The calcium hydroxide chemistry is really what sets it apart. Instead of the eugenol base found in many traditional sealers, Sealapex uses a non-eugenol polymer system built around calcium oxide in the base paste. Once mixed, it forms a clinically manageable sealer layer around the obturation material, formulated for tissue compatibility when used according to the manufacturer's protocol.

Sealapex is designed to adapt between the prepared canal walls and the gutta-percha, filling small irregularities the solid core material can't occupy on its own. That supports a more continuous obturation interface — though, as with any sealer, this isn't a guarantee of complete leakage prevention. Controlled placement still matters, and material should never be forced beyond the apical foramen.

Because it's radiopaque, both the sealer and the completed obturation show up clearly on postoperative radiographs, which makes it easier to assess the extent, density, and general distribution of the fill after treatment. And since it's a paste-paste system, you're mixing only what you need for the procedure at hand, without unnecessary waste.

The kit contains a 12 g base tube, an 18 g catalyst tube, and a mixing pad. Between the straightforward mixing system, the calcium hydroxide–based chemistry, and its compatibility with gutta-percha, Sealapex remains a practical choice for routine permanent root canal obturation.

Directions to use
  • Clean and shape the root canal; irrigate to remove debris
  • Mix base and catalyst to a homogenous consistency
  • Apply sealer using a suitable applicator or lentulo spiral, covering canal walls thoroughly
  • Fill the canal with gutta-percha or other filling material
  • Ensure even distribution without excess at canal orifices
  • Allow sealer to set as per manufacturer’s instructions before proceeding
Additional Information
Indications Recommended for: Permanent sealing of prepared root canals Use with gutta-percha during endodontic obturation Conventional root canal filling procedures in permanent teeth Cases where a calcium hydroxide–based, non-eugenol sealer is clinically preferred Clinical Considerations Use as a root canal sealer together with gutta-percha or another approved obturation core; do not use as the sole bulk-filling material. Apply a controlled quantity and avoid excessive extrusion beyond the apical foramen. Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity to any listed component. Follow the current Kerr instructions for use for mixing proportions, working time, setting conditions, and approved obturation techniques.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's used during permanent root canal obturation to seal the interface between the prepared canal walls and the gutta-percha core.
A polymeric, calcium hydroxide–based endodontic sealer, supplied as separate base and catalyst pastes.
No. It's meant to function as a sealer around gutta-percha or another approved obturation core, not as a stand-alone bulk root-filling material.
Yes. Its radiopacity allows the completed root canal filling to be evaluated on postoperative radiographs.
As a kit containing a 12 g base tube, an 18 g catalyst tube, and a mixing pad.
The two pastes have different formulations and are supplied in the quantities set for this product presentation. The actual mixing proportion should come from the current manufacturer instructions rather than being inferred from the tube weights.
It adapts between the prepared canal walls and the gutta-percha core, helping fill small spaces and irregularities that the solid obturation material cannot occupy alone.
No. It is intended to be used as a sealer with gutta-percha or another approved obturation core. The sealer fills the interface around the core material rather than replacing it.
Complete cleaning, shaping, irrigation, and drying according to the manufacturer's protocol. Visible irrigant should not remain inside the canal before the sealer is applied.
The calcium hydroxide–based chemistry supports an alkaline endodontic environment and is intended to offer good tissue compatibility when used according to the prescribed technique.
